The Synology debacle

A while ago Synology published the news that their new line of NASes will only support verified drives. What this meant was quite unclear at first. The list for new models like the DS925+ however only show Synology branded drives. The question is if this list wil be expanded to drives from other brands.

The excellent NASCompares YouTube channel tried out some drives from other brands on a 2025 model and it turns out you can’t even use those.

The press release was a clusterfuck. So many things were unclear. When you drop a bomb on your customers like that you have to be clear about your intentions. Reddit and other forums are now full of people writing their next NAS will not be a Synology. Who can blame them?

Maybe Synology themselves did not know yet how restrictive the list is going to be or maybe they were just waiting to see how the news would be received.

However… I am in the market for a new NAS and I might still choose a Synology for my next NAS. More on that in a next post.
